Service Description: Administers centralized waiting list for approximately 5,000 subsidized rental housing units in York Region, operated by Housing York Inc (see separate record) and non-profit and co-operative housing organizations
  • subsidies for successful applicants are generally based on income
  • determines eligibility for outside programs such as Portable Housing Benefit (Special Priority Housing Category)

Application: Call for more information, or complete and submit subsidized housing application form and other forms/documents as required
All forms are available online and at the office, or can be mailed to applicants on request; completed forms can be mailed, emailed, faxed or dropped off at the office
For wheelchair accessible units, applicant must have doctor complete Request for Modified Accessible Unit form; for special priority status, complete and submit Verification of Abuse and Request for Special Priority forms
Notice of Decision will include instructions on option to appeal the decision of rejected; once accepted, applicant can refuse first two offers of a unit, but will no longer be eligible if third offer refused
Eligibility / Target Population: York residents who are legal residents of Canada or refugee claimants unable to afford full market rent, and who meet Housing Access eligibility requirements:
  • applicant must be 16 years or older
  • all members of the household must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or have Refugee Claimant Status
  • cannot owe money to a former social housing provider, and cannot be under a deportation, departure or exclusion order to leave Canada
  • no members of household owing money to a social housing provider, or has been convicted of an offence within the past two years under the housing services act, the Social Housing Reform Act or the Criminal Code in relation to the receipt of rent-geared-to-income assistance
  • annual household income must be less than $80,000
  • total value of assets must be less than $75,000
  • must be able to live independently

Also special priority status for victims and survivors of domestic abuse or human trafficking whose safety is at risk
